Weekend - Mixed and changeable
Pic by Maeve Aldridge
Summary The weather for the weekend is mixed with some rain at first on Friday, sun and light showers on Saturday and turning mild on Sunday with a mix of cloud and rain for the north, drier and brighter towards the south for the first part of the day but cloud and rain moving up from the southwest during the day. The current setup Ireland will continue to be dominated by low pressure to our east, north and west. High pressure to our southwest will ridge slowly towards us during Saturday afternoon. However, the high pressure cell will stay to our south maintaining a southwest airflow which will introduce a mild and moist airflow during Sunday. Friday A front straddling the country from east to west will begin to break up as we move through the afternoon. Patchy light rain and drizzle will continue with low cloud and murkiness in the southern half of Ireland with the odd pocket of moderate rainfall at first. Much fresher and brighter skies over Ulster but a risk of showers developing here during the afternoon. These brighter skies will slowly move south into the midlands, west and east during the day but mostly cloud conditions prevailing in the south until late in the day. Top temperatures of 13 to 15C with winds settling into a cool northerly direction. A mix of cloud and clear spells overnight with lows of 7 to 10C with mist developing around dawn. Saturday A much brighter day overall. Although most places will stay dry, some showers are likely to develop but they should be on the light side and scattered. These mainly affecting the northern half of the country. A cool and fresh day with highs of 13 to 16C. Showers should start to fade away in the afternoon as a ridge of high pressure moves in from the southwest. Cloud will tend to break up and it should be a fine end to the day if on the cool side. Winds will be light from a northwest direction overland but fresh along the northeast and off the southwest coasts. Winds back into the west during the evening. A cool night with lows of 6 to 10C, coolest in the midlands. Later a weak weather front will introduce cloud and light rain in northern areas. Sunday A dry start to the day in many parts with good sunny spells in places. Some lingering cloud and light rain will move away from the north with brighter skies here. However low cloud and mist affecting the west and southwest coastal fringes will thicken with patchy light rain and drizzle. This cloud will then push across the country through the course of the day with patchy light rain occurring through the afternoon but rainfall amounts will be small in the eastern half of Ireland. It will turn milder with top temperatures around 16 to 19C and feeling warm in any sunshine before cloud increases. Winds now in from the southwest but still light overall. The outlook is for high pressure to be close by to the south but weather fronts caught up in the southwest flow with rain moving in from the Atlantic. The rain could be heavy in the northwest of the country and lighter further south and east. The driest weather could be in the southeast of the country with good dry bright weather at times. Continuing on the mild side with temperatures in and around average for the time of year in the mid to high teens.
